Lab basics
Before any special reagent, you need clean containers, accurate measuring, safe storage, and protective gear.
What exists today
| Need | Examples (verified links) | Maturity |
|---|---|---|
| School-friendly chemicals and safety gear | Flinn Scientific | Sells to schools and educators |
| Biotech teaching kits | Edvotek , miniPCR bio , Bento Lab | Classroom DNA work |
| General lab supplies | VWR , Thermo Fisher | Usually needs an institutional account |
| Hardware and fasteners | McMaster-Carr | Anyone |
Starter list for a self-assembly bench: safety glasses, nitrile gloves, a digital scale, graduated cylinders and pipettes, distilled water, petri dishes, a hot plate or water bath with a thermometer, a phone microscope clip, labels, and a notebook.
Bottlenecks and gaps
Many research suppliers only ship to institutions, and some chemicals can’t be shipped to homes. Partnering with a school, university outreach program, or community lab solves most of this.
Safety notes
Read the Safety Data Sheet for every chemical. Never eat or drink at the bench. Label everything. Ask your teacher or lab manager how to dispose of waste. See Safety and regulation.
